Top South American Sire Luhuk Dies At Age 28

Luhuk, a European stakes winner, perennial leading sire in South America, and sire of Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Calidoscopio, died at Haras La Quebrada in Argentina, Turf Diario reports.

The 28-year-old son of Forty Niner had been living as a pensioner since 2015 when declining fertility took him out of active stallion duty.

Bred in Kentucky by Edward A. Cox Jr., Luhuk sold to Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Shadwell Estate Co. for $500,000 at the 1992 Keeneland July Select Yearling Sale. He was sent to begin his racing career in Europe, where he won a pair of non-graded stakes and placed in a pair of Group 3 races in England. Luhuk was relocated to Dubai for his 4- and 5-year-old seasons, were he added three more wins to his record.

Luhuk retired to stud in Haras La Quebrada, where his foals immediately got off the mark. According to a 2000 note in BloodHorse, seven of his first eight known foals in his initial crop were stakes winners or stakes-placed by their 3-year-old season, all in Argentina, including Group 1 winner Guernika.

That attracted the attention of North American breeders, and Luhuk was brought to Gainesway in Lexington, Ky., to stand the 2001 Northern Hemisphere breeding season. He shuttled between hemispheres until the 2005 breeding season, after which the stallion’s Northern Hemisphere shareholders sold their interest back to Haras La Quebrada and he remained in Argentina.

Luhuk’s most familiar runner for U.S. observers was Calidoscopio, who was a Group 1 winner in his native Argentina, then came stateside to win the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Santa Anita Park and G2 Brooklyn Handicap, both in his signature extra-deep closing style.

Luhuk also sired Avanzado, who was a Group 3 winner in Argentina before heading north to rack up wins including the G1 Ancient Title Breeders’ Cup Handicap. He retired to Harris Farms in California before eventually relocating to stand in Brazil.

In total, Luhuk sired 421 winners over the course of 20 crops.
