Owners To Move Masochistic From Ellis To Baffert Barn

The Blood-Horse reported Friday that Grade 1 winner Masochistic will be transferred from trainer Ron Ellis to Bob Baffert after completing several months’ rest at Taylor Made Farm. The 7-year-old gelding has been Ellis’ care for the last ten starts, including his disqualification from a second-place finish in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint due to a post-race drug test that came up positive for an anabolic steroid.

Will Shamlian told writer Jeremy Balan the disqualification did not have an impact on the decision.

Masochistic has started twice this year — once finishing second in the G1 Triple Bend and once finishing thirteenth in the Churchill Downs Stakes. He is currently enjoying a few months’ turnout in Kentucky and is not likely to be back in training for a few more months.

Ellis said he really didn’t know the reasons for the move and “thought I did pretty well with the horse.”
