New York: Cuomo’s Budget Plan Includes Provision For Night Racing At Belmont

Among the items listed in the 2018 state budget plan New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo released Tuesday was a provision that would allow the New York Racing Association to conduct night racing at Belmont Park.

According to a report in the BloodHorse, the proposal, which will need to be approved by the legislature, would allow horse racing after sunset during limited periods.

The proposal would allow ‘post-sunset’ racing only if races are conducted on the main track in its current configuration, and the race card must conclude by 10:30 p.m. Night racing would be limited to Thursday through Saturday nights.

In addition, NYRA would have to coordinate post times with Yonkers Raceway to “ensure that starting times of all such races are staggered.”

New York’s 2018 budget will be finalized in early spring.
