Maximum Security Back On Work Tab, Targeting Oct. 26 Bold Ruler Stakes

A colic episode precluded Maximum Security from entering the starting gate for the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby last month, but the 3-year-old son of New Year’s Day appears to be recovering nicely as he graced the Monmouth Park work tab on Saturday morning. Clocked in 52.80 seconds for a half, Maximum Security actually breezed an “open mile,” trainer Jason Servis told horseracingnation.com.

Instead of rushing the colt to make it to the Breeders’ Cup, Servis is planning to aim for Belmont Park’s G3 Bold Ruler Stakes on Oct. 26. A seven-furlong contest, the Bold Ruler will be the first time Maximum Security takes on older rivals.

This season, Maximum Security has won the G1 Florida Derby and G1 Haskell Invitational, and crossed the wire first in the Kentucky Derby before a historic disqualification relegated him to an official placing of 17th. His record makes the colt a leading contender for the 3-year-old Eclipse Award.
