Irap Just Up To Defeat Girvin By A Nose In Ohio Derby

J. Paul Reddam's Blue Grass Stakes winner Irap closed with long, grinding strides down the stretch to just get his nose in front of Louisiana Derby winner Girvin at the wire in Saturday's G3, $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown. The massive son of Tiznow, piloted by jockey Julien Leparoux, stayed within five lengths of the frontrunners throughout, making his move down the center of the track to stop the clock in 1:50.48 for 1 1/8 miles over the fast dirt course. Trained by Doug O'Neill, Irap was making his first start since the Kentucky Derby, in which he finished 18th.
