Irad Ortiz’ ‘Familiarity’ With Course Earns Belmont Mount On Lookin At Lee

Trainer Steve Asmussen, who sent Creator out to win the Belmont Stakes by a nose last year, has tabbed the same jockey to ride this year's contender, Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin at Lee. According to drf.com, Irad Ortiz, Jr. has been named to ride the son of Lookin at Lucky in the third leg of the Triple Crown, replacing regular rider Corey Lanerie.

“He's riding him for the exact same reason Corey Lanerie rode him in the Derby,” Asmussen said, “the familiarity with Belmont itself.”

Lanerie's record at Belmont is just two wins from 27 starts, though he has earned multiple riding titles at Churchill Downs. Irad Ortiz is currently the leading rider at Belmont Park, and has earned three riding titles at the New York oval.
