Belmont Stakes Not Completely Out Of The Picture For Irish War Cry

Wood Memorial winner Irish War Cry, who finished tenth in the G1 Kentucky Derby, may start in the G1 Belmont Stakes June 10 after all.

Trainer Graham Motion told the Daily Racing Form on Wednesday that he hasn't ruled out running the son of Curlin in the 1 1/2-mile classic.

“After this weekend, I had to think about it a little bit more and not just totally overlook it,” Motion told the DRF. Irish War Cry defeated Preakness winner Cloud Computing by seven lengths in the Wood Memorial in April. He also defeated Preakness runner-up Classic Empire by 8 3/4 lengths in the G2 Holy Bull Stakes in February.

“The more I look at the Derby, I feel like he didn't run his race that day for whatever reason, whether the track or coming back after running such a big race in the Wood,” Motion said. “If he looks like he's in great form, I owe it to him and the owners to think about it rather than just sort of overlooking it.”

Irish War Cry has been jogging for the past few days; he is scheduled to return to the work tab this weekend.
