‘You Can’t Question Destiny’: One-Eyed Finnick The Fierce Aimed At Kentucky Derby

Based at The Thoroughbred Center in Lexington, Ky., Finnick the Fierce is poised to give trainer and co-owner Rey Hernandez his first trip to the Kentucky Derby next month at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old son of Dialed In has earned a total of 25 points, good for 19th on the leaderboard, and will be aimed at the Run for the Roses.

Unraced since a disappointing seventh-place finish in the G2 Blue Grass at Keeneland on July 11, Finnick the Fierce may have had an excuse in that race, reports Horse Racing Nation. The one-eyed colt “got a lot of dirt in his good eye, his only eye,” said co-owner Dr. Arnaldo Monge; Finnick the Fierce lost his other eye when he was younger due to a congenital cataract.

Prior to the Blue Grass, the colt has posted promising efforts with a third in the G1 Arkansas Derby division won by Nadal, as well as a second-place finish ahead of prohibitive Derby favorite Tiz the Law in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes last November. Overall, his record stands at two wins, a second, and two thirds from nine starts for earnings of $191,290.

“God has a plan, I guess, and you can’t question destiny,” Monge told Horse Racing Nation. “He made the Derby, so we’ll find the best way we can to get him ready.”

Ridden by Jose Ortiz in the Blue Grass, Finnick the Fierce may be partnered by Kentucky-based Martin Garcia in the Kentucky Derby.
