With Monomoy Girl On The Shelf, Covfefe Gives Cox Barn Strong Breeders’ Cup Hopes

This weekend’s Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs will serve as the final Breeders’ Cup prep for Covfefe, the in-training star of Brad Cox’s barn.

Last year’s 3-year-old champion filly and Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Monomoy Girl has been that star but she’s unraced this year and is at WinStar Farm recovering from a muscle pull she suffered in training. Her owners plan to race her at 5, according to the Daily Racing Form, but Monomoy Girl is likely on the shelf for the remainder of this year.

Meanwhile, Covfefe has had an excellent season and is pointing for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The 3-year-old filly heads into the Dogwood off a Grade 1 score in the Test Stakes at Saratoga, her first G1 victory. She’s won three of four in 2019. In the Miss Preakness Stakes May 17, she crushed the six furlong track record at Pimlico.

“We could’ve run in a couple other spots, but we thought the timing of this race toward the Breeders’ Cup was perfect, and that’s the most important factor,” Cox told DRF about the Dogwood Stakes. “Plus it’s for 3-year-olds only, and she gets to run out of her own stall.”
