Winter Leads Aidan O’Brien Exacta In 1000 Guineas

Trainer Aidan O'Brien has done it again, wrapping up the Guineas double at Newmarket for the third time in his career on Sunday, reports The Guardian. Sophomore filly Winter, by Galileo, and her stablemate Rhododendron, also by Galileo, finished 1-2 in the 1000 Guineas to give O'Brien the exacta a day after star sophomore colt Churchill (another Galileo) took home the prize in the 2000 Guineas.

The wagering favorite, Rhododendron, was piloted by top jockey Ryan Moore but found traffic at an inopportune time in the race.

“She traveled beautifully and just when I needed to be making my run, I ran out of room at an important stage,” Moore said. “She obviously ran a very good race and the winner's a very good horse as well. I think they're two good fillies.”

Winter, in turn, was piloted by Wayne Lordan, who was winning his first classic aboard the Coolmore partner-owned filly.
