‘Why Not Go For It?’: Wonder Gadot To Skip Breeders’ Futurity, Point To Travers

Instead of continuing on the trail to try and win the Canadian Triple Crown in the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine, Gary Barber’s Wonder Gadot looks likely to take on males in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga Auig. 25.. The filly defeated males in both the Queen’s Plate and the Prince of Wales Stakes – the first two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown – but trainer Mark Casse told nationalpost.com that the turf, over which the Breeders’ Stakes is run, is the filly’s least-preferred surface.

After Saturday’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes, in which John Oxley’s Flameaway ran a good second for Casse, the trainer told NYRA’s media office: “As of an hour ago, I think Wonder Gadot is going to run in the Travers. We’ll see. I’m fairly certain, if everything stays the same, we’re going to try the Travers with her. She likes a mile and a quarter as good as anybody. We figure it’s one of our only shots, so why not go for it? As far as Flameaway, I’ll have to talk to Mr. Oxley.”

Wonder Gadot, bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms and a $325,000 OBS April 2-year-old sale purchase, was a close second one dirt  to divisional leader Monomoy Girl in the G1 Kentucky Oaks. Her record currently stands at 5-4-3 from 13 starts, with earnings over $1.3 million.
