What’s In Your Wallet? British Hurdler Samuel Jackson Springs 100-1 Upset In Racing Debut

Punters that were wise enough – or rather, lucky enough – to have a wager on 100-1 shot Samuel Jackson Thursday at Taunton Racecourse in England were handsomely rewarded when the 5-year-old gelding charged to a 3 1/4-length victory in his hurdling debut.

The Racing Post reports that Samuel Jackson had previously won two point-to-point races, but this was his first appearance racing ‘under rules’. The victory was also the first for his trainer, Richard Mitford-Slade, a “farmer who runs an equestrian business.”

Mitford-Slade told the Post, “It’s my first runner under rules – I got my permit only 14 days ago. This is my local track so I thought I’d run him here in the hottest hurdle I could find!”

The gelding is named after the famous “Pulp Fiction” actor, with Mitford-Slade telling the Post, “My wife is a fan. We tried to put the ‘L’ in but they wouldn’t let us have it.”
