Weekend Lineup: The Build-Up

Several graded stakes punctuate the Thoroughbred racing scene this weekend as fans continue to gear up for the first Saturday in May. Derby and Oaks horses will have their final major works at Churchill and several other tracks as the excitement continues to build for the “Fastest Two Minutes In Sports.”

The G2 Californian at Santa Anita on Saturday features Bob Baffert trainee Dr. Dorr, making his first graded stakes start since his juvenile season. Last out, the son of Lookin at Lucky won the listed Santana Mile, and he is favored at 8-5 on the morning line.

Earlier on the card, the G3 Santa Barbara offers a quartet of Richard Baltas trainees against one of Baffert’s and an Eric Kruljac. On the same afternoon, Churchill will feature twilight racing on its first day of the 2018 season.

Sunday’s San Simeon at Santa Anita features recent Dubai runner Conquest Tsunami for trainer Peter Miller.
