Weekend Lineup: Queen’s Plate, United Nations

A busy Saturday of graded stakes action awaits Thoroughbred racing fans this weekend, highlighted by the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine. Both Gulfstream and Monmouth also offer a pair of graded stakes, while closing day at Churchill Downs features juvenile racing in the Bluegrass.

The 1 1/4-mile Queen’s Plate has historically been a favorable scenario for fillies, and this year appears to be no exception as the talented Wonder Gadot and Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon face down the boys. Plate Trial winner Telekinesis is the morning line favorite, giving trainer Mark Casse the top two choices in the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Trainer Chad Brown has a similar scenario in the Grade 1 United Nations at Monmouth Park, saddling four of the nine entrants in the 1 3/8-mile turf contest. Money Multiplier is the morning-line choice, but the Mike Maker-trained pair of Oscar Nominated and Bigger Picture will definitely be tough to handle.

At Gulfstream, the highlight of the card is X Y Jet’s expected start in the G3 Smile Sprint, a “Win and You’re In” for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Likely to be the heavy favorite and a single on most Rainbow 6 tickets, X Y Jet will start from the widest post in the eight-horse field.

Other major players to watch this weekend include:

  • Curlin’s Approval in the Princess Rooney
  • Midnight Bisou in the Mother Goose
  • Holy Helena in the Dance Smartly
