Weekend Lineup: Breeders’ Cup World Championships

It’s finally here, the weekend we’ve all been waiting for! The Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs kicks off on Friday afternoon at 3:21 PM EST with the Juvenile Turf Sprint, and concludes on Saturday at 5:44 PM EST in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Here are some of the top storylines in this year’s Breeders’ Cup:

  • Juvenile Turf Sprint: Well Done Fox’s owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, was killed earlier this week in a helicopter crash. The colt will be the only starter to don the King Power colors this week.
  • Juvenile Fillies Turf: Chad Brown will be trying to win this race for the third year in a row with morning-line favorite Newspaperofrecord.
  • Juvenile Fillies: Jockey Corey Lanerie, named to ride Serengeti Empress, lost his wife just five months ago.
  • Juvenile Turf: Aidan O’Brien-trained favorite Anthony Van Dyck will have to overcome the outermost post in the 14-horse field.
  • Juvenile: Mind Control, winner of the G1 Hopeful, is the first G1 winner and first Breeders’ Cup starter for mid-Atlantic based trainer Greg Sacco.
  • Filly & Mare Sprint: Last year’s winning owners Chester and Mary Broman have another longshot entered this year in New York-bred Highway Star.
  • Turf Sprint: Indiana-bred Bucchero takes on the best in the world for local trainer Tim Glyshaw.
  • Dirt Mile: Catalina Cruiser is undefeated, and would probably be a single-digit odds in the Classic had Sadler entered him there.
  • Filly & Mare Turf: Chad Brown has entered a record-equaling five in this race, including slight favorite Sistercharlie.
  • Sprint: The Imperial Hint/Roy H rematch is on!
  • Mile: Possibly the best betting race on the card, with a 5-1 morning line favorite.
  • Distaff: Oaks winners Abel Tasman and Monomoy Girl square off beneath the Twin Spires.
  • Turf: Queen Enable takes on a full field of challengers in her quest to complete the Arc/Turf double.
  • Classic: Very wide open field with serious international flavor in the form of Roaring Lion, Mendelssohn and Thunder Snow.
