Weather, Small Fields Fail To Drown Record Preakness Handle

One might think Stronach Group officials would be wincing to see the betting numbers from Saturday’s card at Pimlico Race Course, but the Daily Racing Form reports total handle on the Preakness Stakes set a record. Meanwhile, the all-sources betting for the day’s card was down just 4.4. percent.

The Preakness Stakes’ total handle reached $61.97 million, up from 2016’s record number of $61.27 million. The 14-race card, while showing a decrease, was still the third-best Preakness Day card in terms of handle.

The numbers came despite rain thoroughout the week in Baltimore, which forced several races off the turf and helped dwindle field sizes.

“I was really surprised,” the Stronach Group’s Tim Ritvo told DRF. “I honestly thought we were going to get killed with the weather and the fields.”
