Vow And Declare Victorious In Melbourne Cup; Dettori Suspended For Ride On Runner-Up

Australian-bred Vow and Declare gave his countrymen reason to celebrate when he won the Melbourne Cup by a head, overturning a ten-year streak of foreign winners, according to The Guardian. The 4-year-old marked the first winner in the Melbourne Cup for trainer Danny O’Brien and jockey Craig Williams.

“It’s an amazingly special thing to happen. I really can’t believe it,” O’Brien said post-race. “I feel incredibly blessed to have a horse good enough to be in it and then for him to be ridden so beautifully by Craig. The last 100m he wouldn’t give in, he wouldn’t give in and then put his head down on the line and now we’ve won the Melbourne Cup.”

Second past the wire was the Joseph O’Brien-trained Master of Reality, ridden by Frankie Dettori. Stewards demoted Master of Reality from second to fourth for interference with Il Paradiso in the stretch, making the order of finish: Vow and Declare, Prince of Arran, Il Paradiso, and then Master of Reality.

Dettori was suspended for eight days for his ride on Master of Reality.

“I’m more gutted for Frankie than I am for myself,” Joseph O’Brien told racingpost.com. “I’ll be back next year but I don’t know if Frankie is ever going to win this race.”

In addition, Prince of Arran’s jockey Michael Walker was suspended for seven races and fined A$10,000 for excessive use of the whip.

The horse who finished last in the Melbourne Cup, Rostropovich, pulled up lame and was transported to University of Melbourne Equine Centre. He was found to have a stress fracture in his pelvis, but Racing Victoria indicated that the horse “is in a stable condition, comfortable and receiving the best veterinary care. Rostropovich will be confined to box rest for the near future and will be closely monitored over the coming days by veterinary staff.”
