Veterinarian To Spend 50 Hours In A Stall To Raise Cash For Silent Ruler, Other OTTBs

Starting March 9, 2018 at 5 p.m. a volunteer with the organization Pennsylvania Racehorse Re-homing, Rehabilitation, and Rescue (PARR) will be living in a horse stall at the non-profit’s farm for 50 hours straight in hopes of raising $10,000 for the organization. The money will go towards the vet care expenses of three horses that were taken from the track with serious signs of neglect, one of whom had life threatening injuries.

“These horses give their all on the track for our enjoyment, pleasure, and monetary gain,” said Dr. Bryan Langlois, who will be the one staying in the stall. “Some don’t deserve the cruel hand of fate they have been dealt with the neglect they have suffered, and all of us owe it to them to do whatever is necessary to care for the ones we come across after their racing careers are over. PARR is one of the best  Thoroughbred rescues out there and I am very proud to be associated with them. If I have to endure a small amount of discomfort to both raise the awareness and the funds needed to care for these horses, then to me that is a very small price to pay compared to what some of PARR’s horses have been through.”

One of the horses in particular that PARR hopes to raise funds for is Silent Ruler, who was the subject of a alleged neglect case at Penn National last year. The Mario Rafael Rodriguez trainee was discovered in apparent distress with a fracture to his ankle. Rodriguez’s license was eventually revoked by the commission due to the condition of Silent Ruler and other horses in his care. The gelding was signed over to PARR and received surgery to treat the fracture.

He suffered a few minor complications after his surgery but now is on the road to full recovery, with a new adoptive home and wonderful pasture just waiting for him once he is discharged from the hospital. All of this care costs a large sum of money, however, and his bill will end up being around $20,000. PARR has already raised about 75 percent of that amount, and Langlois hopes to raise the rest this weekend during this event.

Two other horses who will hopefully benefit from Dr. Langlois’s “stall time” are Awesome Wink and You R Wonderful who also were neglect cases from the track that were taken in by PARR. While not having issues as expensive or in depth as Silent Ruler they each also have vet care that will cost in the range of $1,000 to $3,000.

The event will feature live updates from the stall with Dr. Langlois on PARR’s Facebook page and people looking to donate to PARR to help get him out of the stall sooner can do so by visiting their website at, their Facebook page, or their Twitter page of @PARR_OTTB and clicking on the links provided for the event. People can also donate directly at the farm if they so choose from the hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
