Velazquez Scores In Back-To-Back Clasico Del Caribe Stakes

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez scored back-to-back victories in Saturday’s $600,000 Clasico Internacional del Caribe Stakes on Saturday’s program at Gulfstream Park.

Velazquez captured the $100,000 Copa Confraternidad del Caribe aboard Panama’s El Tigre Mono ($18.20) and the $114,200 Copa Velocidade del Caribe with Venezuela’s Master Supreme ($24.40).

El Tigre Mono ($18.20) raced in the middle of the pack along the backstretch before advancing on the turn to enter contention at the top of the stretch as Arquitecto opened up a clear lead over a tiring Igor. Arquitecto, the 2012 Puerto Rico Triple Crown champion, started drifting out through the stretch run. Velazquez sent El Tigre Mono to the inside leaving the 1/16th-pole, and the 4-year-old son of Concerto responded to catch Arquitecto by a neck.

When Velazquez made his way to the winner’s circle with El Tigre Mono, he was greeted by an enthusiastic, boisterous crowd.

“The celebration in the winner’s circle is how the Latin people like to celebrate. A lot of chaos, but you have to celebrate,” Velasquez said.

El Tigre Mono, a Group 2 stakes winner in his last start in Panama, ran the 1 ¼ miles over a sloppy track in 2:05.69. Arquitecto, ridden by Juan Claros Diaz, held second 5 ¼ lengths ahead of Mexico’s Igor.

Velazquez took an entirely different route to victory in the Copa Velocidad, guiding Rontos Racing Stable’s Master Supreme to a front-running two-length victory in the six-furlong sprint.

The lightly raced Master Supreme, who had won one of three starts in Venezuela, scored his first stakes victory while running six furlongs on a sloppy track in 1:12.49. Mexico’s Forze Mau finished second, 3 ¾ lengths ahead of Mexico’s Justiciero.

“The plan was try to be in the first three and he broke so well I just tried to keep him there. Once he broke good, I said, ‘I’m just going to let him do it,’ and he responded right away,” Velazquez said. “The Caribbean Classic day is crazy, but this is how we do it and we’re enjoying it.”
