Utah Senator Introduces Bill Which Could Legalize Wagering On Horse Racing

A state senator in Utah is hoping people there may soon be able to wager on horse racing. According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Sen. David Hinkins is sponsoring a bill that would leave the legality of wagering on races up to individual counties.

Hinkins, who has horses in other states, points out breeders are leaving the state, taking economic development with them.

According to the Tribune, the bill is considered an uphill battle; a racing advocacy group tried to legalize parimutuel wagering in the early 1990s but the effort failed when it encountered resistance from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
