Updated: Lilac Brush Fire Spreads To San Luis Rey Downs

Tweets from various California-based turfwriters and horsemen late Thursday indicate that barns at San Luis Rey Downs training center have caught fire as part of the rapidly-spreading Lilac Fire which started earlier in the day. Trainers there are telling media that one or more buildings at the facility are on fire, and horses have been let loose from their stalls in hopes they will be able to escape the blaze.

High winds of more than 20 miles per hour have complicated the fight against out-of-control blazes in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

The fire threatening the training center started early Thursday afternoon near Interstate 15 where it intersects with California Highway 76. The blaze appears to be moving and growing extremely rapidly.

NBC 7 News in San Diego tweeted video of horses in the path of the Lilac Fire running loose. It's unclear where those horses came from.
