Update: Strangles At Delaware Park

A horse with strangles was reported at Delaware Park racetrack on July 3 and the Kentucky State Veterinarian placed a hold barring horses stabled on the grounds of Delaware Park to enter Kentucky racetracks. This hold was removed on July 5.

Kentucky horses that are shipping into Delaware Park with the intention to return to Kentucky are being stalled in the receiving barn at the track. This barn is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected daily, and the starting gate and other common areas for horses are being disinfected between races.

The horses that have been confirmed with strangles are isolated outside the stabling areas; horses that have been exposed to the affected horses are segregated from the general population and under regulatory restriction.

Kentucky horses are allowed to return to their Kentucky tracks at minimal risk because of the adopted precautions at Delaware Park. Horsemen are encouraged to practice their own biosecurity protocols in addition to those that are in place.
