Undefeated Maxfield Out Of Derby Consideration After Condylar Fracture

The Daily Racing Form’s Marty McGee reported Wednesday morning that Kentucky Derby contender Maxfield is out of consideration for the race after suffering a condylar fracture in his right front canon bone after a workout at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

The injury is not considered life-threatening, and the colt is expected to undergo surgery with Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital’s Dr. Larry Bramlage on Wednesday.

Maxfield is undefeated in his three starts, including wins in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity and the G3 Matt Winn in late May. The Brendan Walsh trainee had 60 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Walsh told Horse Racing Nation Tuesday he expected the colt would shoot for the G2 Blue Grass at Keeneand later this summer.

The son of Street Sense is a homebred for owner Godolphin and is out of Bernardini mare Velvety.
