U.S. House Subcommittee To Hold Jan. 28 Hearing On Horseracing Integrity Act

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced on Tuesday that the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, January 28, at 10:30 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building on H.R. 1754, the “Horseracing Integrity Act of 2019.”  The hearing is entitled, “Legislation to Promote the Health and Safety of Racehorses.”

The bipartisan legislation was introduced in March by Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) and Congressman Paul Tonko (D-NY). Barr and Tonko have introduced a version of the Horseracing Integrity Act since 2015.

“Over the last couple of years, the horse racing world has experienced some alarming deaths that call into question the health and safety of racehorses,” a statement from Pallone and Schakowsky said.  “We are holding this hearing to explore legislation to protect racehorses, and their jockeys, across the country and ensure their health and safety is top of mind for all parties involved in the sport.”

“This hearing is an important step in furthering the conversation around the need for transparency and standardization in horseracing,” said Barr, whose district includes Lexington. “I look forward to a robust discussion with Members of the Energy and Commerce Committee and equine industry experts on how to ensure the integrity and safety of the sport. As the Representative of the Horse Capital of the World, I will continue to fight for the future of horseracing and build on this momentum to bring this vital legislation to the House floor for a vote.”

Information for this hearing, including the Majority Memorandum, witness list and testimony, and a live webcast, will be posted HERE as they become available.
