Trevor McCarthy Wins Five Saturday At Laurel Park

Jockey Trevor McCarthy celebrated Saturday’s Christmastide Day program at Laurel Park with five wins, including three of five stakes, and effectively clinched the fall meet riding title.

McCarthy won Race 2 aboard Let’s Play Nine ($3.60), the first of two wins on the day for trainer Mike Trombetta. One race later, McCarthy led 1-2 favorite Threefiveindia ($3) to victory in the Dave’s Friend, the first of five $100,000 stakes on the nine-race card.

“It’s cool. It’s nice. Everything really worked out,” McCarthy said. “I’m very lucky, very privileged. A lot of the credit goes to the trainers and the grooms and the hotwalkers; they do all the hard work and then they give us two minutes and leave it up to us.”

McCarthy returned to the winner’s circle in Race 6, the $100,000 Native Dancer, on Someday Jones ($7.60), a 6-year-old son of 2004 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winner Smarty Jones – both trained by John Servis.

McCarthy closed the day by sweeping the late double with Majestic Reason ($5.80) in the $100,000 Willa On the Move in Race 8 and Cassidy Ave ($6.40) in Race 9. His efforts gave him a 52-45 edge over runner-up Sheldon Russell in the rider standings; Russell is named in five races on Sunday’s closing day card. Alex Cintron, third with 44 wins, has four mounts Sunday. McCarthy is named in three races.

“I was excited. I thought I could get a few winners today and everything really worked out nice,” McCarthy said. “The last race just goes to show you, I’m having such a highlight day and everything’s going great so I’m just going to sit there and wait. You just have so much confidence when you win races. I knew I had a lot of horse so I was just extremely patient and it paid off. Days like today are freaky, and they’re fun. It’s hard sometimes with ups and downs, but this is what makes it great.”
