‘Throwback’ Owner Dodge Passes At Age 66

Long-time Thoroughbred owner James Anthony “Tony” Dodge passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 5, after a battle with cancer. The 66-year-old was surrounded by his family and photographs of his horses.

“He was kind of a throwback to the old type of owner,” said trainer Larry Bates. “He always gave me as much time as I needed with a horse; he was a great man to train for.”

Under his Bluestone Thoroughbreds banner, Dodge’s best horse was the multiple stakes-winner Black Diamond Cat. The Florida-bred son of Wildcat earned just under $500,000 in 66 starts for Dodge, racing primarily in South Florida.

“He really loved his horses,” Bates continued. “He will be missed.”

Dodge’s sons intend to carry on their father’s legacy in the racing business.
