Three Technique On The Shelf After Ankle Surgery; Will Return In One-Turn Races

Three Technique, most recently fourth behind Nadal in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn on March 14, recently underwent ankle surgery and will be sidelined until later this year, according to a report by David Grening in Daily Racing Form.

Owned by the August Dawn Farm of Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells and trained by Jeremiah Englehart, the colt by Mr Speaker was impressive in back-to-back victories last year at 2, breaking his maiden by 5 1/2 lengths at Saratoga in his third start Aug. 31, then scoring by 4 1/2 lengths in an Aqueduct allowance Nov. 20 – both at seven furlongs.

Named for a football term used to describe the positioning of a defensive lineman, Three Technique finished second going a mile as the favorite behind front-running Gold Street in his 2020 debut at Oaklawn in the Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 24. He then finished fourth, beaten eight lengths, in the Rebel at 1 1/16 miles on a sloppy sealed racetrack.

DRF reported that Englehart detected some filling in an ankle when Three Technique resumed training after the Rebel and x-rays indicated a “small flake” that was surgically removed.

Englehart told Grening Three Technique “doesn’t want to go as far as we thought” and that he would point the colt for one turn races this summer.

Bred in Kentucky by Omega Farm and Bally Breeders, Parcells purchased Three Technique for $180,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Yearling Sale.
