‘The Safety Vest Saved Me’: Garcia Avoids Serious Injury In Morning Spill

Jockey Martin Garcia escaped serious injury Tuesday at Del Mar when a filly he was working broke down while she was galloping out, then fell and rolled over top of Garcia.

The Daily Racing Form reports that Garcia was aboard the 2-year-old filly Vitality, an unraced daughter of Smart Strike. The Bob Baffert trainee had completed a five-furlong work in 59.40 when the accident occurred. She was euthanized on the track.

“I’m okay,” Garcia told the Form. “She broke down. I tried to hold her up but then the other leg gave way, too. She rolled over top of me. The safety vest saved me.”
