The ‘Gronk’ On Point For Rescheduled Derby Points Race At Kempton

Phoenix Thoroughbreds’ Gronkowski will be the likely favorite in Wednesday’s rescheduled Road to the Kentucky Derby conditions stakes at Kempton, in which the 3-year-old colt will attempt to extend his two-race win streak. A son of Lonhro, Gronkowski was purchased for $404,492 at the Tattersalls Craven breeze-up sale last year, but the colt did not perform well in his first two starts on the turf.

In his two starts on the all-weather surface at Chelmsford and Newcastle, however, Gronkowski hit the wire first by a combined 10 1/2 lengths. Each race was an allowance over one mile.

“This has been the specific plan since he won at Chelmsford. Newcastle was a prep race, and he took a small step there,” trainer Jeremy Noseda told bloodhorse.com. “I have a lot of faith in the horse and he is more than equipped to compete. He is in great shape, tip-top order. I couldn’t be happier with him and the track will suit, too.”

Gronkowski, who is nominated to the Triple Crown, will be ridden by Jamie Spencer.

The European Road to the Kentucky Derby offers just one spot in the starting gate for the first Saturday in May; Wednesday’s race will give 20 points to the winner. On Friday, the Patton Stakes at Dundalk in Ireland will also offer 20 points to the winner, while the Mar. 30 Burradon conditions stakes offers 30 points to the winner.
