The Crowdfunded ‘People’s Horse,’ A California Chrome Filly, Due This Week

The California Chrome foal at the center of a crowdfunding racehorse ownership project is expected on the ground in Kentucky this week.

Dubbed “The People’s Horse,” the filly out of a Taylor Made Farm mare is due to be born Friday as part of a collaboration between Taylor Made and the online adventure magazine, True.Ink. The project started taking shape more than two years ago, as we reported in 2016

To date, about 600 people have signed up as members of the filly’s ownership club at various pricing levels. The People’s Horse is designed to be a participatory experience, so members can watch the mare, Colerful Bride, via webcam in her stall.

“I guess I’m feeling similar to how a parent might feel, expecting a child,” said Geoffrey Gray, the founder of True.Ink and this project. “There’s all this excitement and joy that it’s finally happening, but at the same time, thinking around the corner of this moment, there’s this unique responsibility to have this animal and the unique experience of being a horse owner.”

It’s hard to think of a better choice for the stallion of “The People’s Horse” than California Chrome, the colt who came from obscurity for neophyte owners to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Dubai World Cup and capture the hearts of racing fans around the world. Colerful Bride is a heartland story — an Iowa-bred six-year-old by Munnings out of an Unbridled’s Song mare who won a black type stakes in 2015 and finished second in another.

Gray hopes this collaboration, which will continue through the filly’s racing career and into retirement, can inspire and bring people together.

“Our economic landscape is changing, our cultural landscape is changing. The world’s becoming smaller, and we’ve tried to build True in a way that people who might be a little bit unsatisfied or a little bit disheartened by the status quo can come together to achieve extraordinary pursuits.”

Other ideas being tossed around for future True projects — crowdfunding a winery or perhaps even a small private island.

Members participating in The People’s Horse will have the opportunity to submit a name for the California Chrome filly and vote on their favorite. Membership levels range from $99 to $500, with those at the highest level having the first chance to buy equity shares in the foal.

True.Ink has added a discount code for readers who sign up before the filly’s birth. Enter PaulickReport at checkout and receive 15% off.
