Tampa Bay Downs ‘Seriously Considering’ Extending Race Meet

A notice on the April 24 overnight at Tampa Bay Downs said: “Attention Horsemen: We are seriously considering extending the meet.”

The current live racing meet at Tampa is scheduled to close on May 3, but the track is one of just five in North America still operating live racing, albeit without spectators, in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

Tampa has implemented strict protocols to help prevent the spread of the virus, including not allowing outside jockeys to ship in to ride and ensuring horses shipping in have had their last work on the state of Florida, among others.

Peter Berube, Tampa’s vice president and general manager, told the Thoroughbred Daily News: “I’m really not going to comment until I get the approval back from the state, and I anticipate getting that sometime this week.”
