Talismanic Prevails Over Beach Patrol, Highland Reel In BC Turf

A European once again captured the 1/2-mile Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar on Saturday, but it wasn’t the horse made the heavy favorite. At 14-1 Talismanic overtook favored Highland Reel and second choice Beach Patrol in deep stretch to prevail in the Grade 1, $400,000 Turf. Beach Patrol held second while even money favorite Highland Reel kept third.

The victory by Talismanic was the third win by trainer Andre Fabre in the Turf. The 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, bred in Great Britain, is owned by Godolphin Stable Lessee. He came into the race having hit the board in all six of his starts in France this year, having won two. He was ridden to victory by French-born jockey Mickael Barzalona.

“It’s my first time I come over, first time I ride in America,” Barzalona said. “To come here for Andre Fabre, for Godolphin and have a horse to have a chance to finish in the first three before the race, it’s a huge honor to ride for this team. Now with age I appreciate a lot more the race than before. I was very young. So now I can understand what it means the big races for the trainer, owner and even for myself.”

Many expected last year’s Turf winner Highland Reel to repeat his dominating gate-to-wire performance but Oscar Performance crossed over from the far outside post (14) to grab the early lead. Beach Patrol and Highland Reel tucked in second and third, while the leader set early fractions of 23.69, 48.33 and 1:12.86. Talismanic sat fifth saving ground along the rail. As the field rounded the far turn for the final run into the stretch, Beach Patrol surged to the front with Highland Reel coming after him. In mid-stretch, Talismanic came off the rail and split to two rivals, taking the lead and finishing well to the wire.

“I know we were there at Chantilly for the Prix de l’Arc, and Andre and the team were pretty keen on his chances,” said Godolphin’s Joe Osborne. “Again, today, probably sometimes maybe just the betting public may overlook these horses. But as I said earlier, if Andre Fabre trains them, I think you have to pay respect.”
