Talented Callaghan Trainee Runs ‘Away’ From Santa Anita Juvenile Field

Although a trip to England and an appointment on turf at Royal Ascot on June 22 was considered following his maiden win here May 26, Kaleem Shah’s talented Run Away stayed home and kept to his task as he prevailed by 1 ½ lengths in Monday’s $100,000 Santa Anita Juvenile. Ridden by Flavien Prat, he covered 5 ½ furlongs in 1:04.17. Trained by Simon Callaghan and owned by Kaleem Shah, the $325,000 Barrett’s March 2-year-old in Training Sale purchase is now unbeaten in two starts.

Well positioned just to the outside of eventual runner-up Argosy Fleet into and around the far turn, Run Away gradually gained the advantage inside the sixteenth pole.

“It’s nice to get the first stakes win for Kaleem,” said Callaghan. “This is a good minded kind of colt. I got a little anxious through the straight (stretch) because he broke a little slow and had to rush up. We’ll go to Del Mar and look at the Best Pal (Grade II, 6 ½ furlongs on Aug. 12) and the Futurity (Grade I, seven furlongs Sept. 4).”

The 3-5 favorite in a field of six juvenile colts, Run Away paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10. A Kentucky-bred colt by the City Zip stallion Run Away and Hide, Run Away picked up $60,000 for the win, bringing his earnings to $92,400.

“I think the added distance will be good for him,” said Prat. “I like the way he galloped out today and the last eighth of a mile was good as well.”

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Argosy Fleet had to contend with the winner to his outside throughout and proved second best, finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of Big Boy Candy. Off at 5-1, Argosy Fleet paid $3.60 and $3.20.

Big Boy Candy, claimed for $50,000 out of a maiden win here on June 4, loomed a menacing third at the top of the lane, but was third best, finishing 6 ¼ lengths in front of Encumbered. Ridden by Tyler Baze, Big Boy Candy was off at 10-1 and paid $4.00 to show.

Fractions on the Juvenile were 21.78, 45.16 and 57.59.
