Sweeping Paddy Scores Easily In Regret

Pacella Racing, Frank Jones and Frank Shoop's Sweeping Paddy finally ran back to her impressive maiden effort last fall at Kentucky Downs, winning this Saturday night's G3 Regret Stakes by almost four lengths on the wire. The sophomore daughter of Paddy O'Prado, ridden by Luis Saez for trainer Dale Romans, covered nine furlongs on Churchill's firm turf in 1:47.62.

Sweeping Paddy was well-placed in third behind a runaway leader in the early going, tracking sensibly off the five-length lead of longshot Like A Hurricane through fractions of :23.30 and :47.04. Summer Luck was closest to that leader, and Sweeping Paddy trailed her by two lengths, leading Sameeha, Starr Bear and Chubby Star down the backstretch.

The field did not begin to close the gap on Like A Hurricane until nearly the head of the lane, but she stopped abruptly after getting out badly on the far turn and Sweeping Paddy flew by her on the outside to sprint away from the field. Saez' well-timed move had Sweeping Paddy under the wire almost four lengths in front of Proctor's Ledge, with Summer Luck checking in third. Chubby Star hung around to be fourth.

Bred in Kentucky by her owners, Sweeping Paddy is out of a winning daughter of Unbridled's Song. She won her second start at Kentucky Downs by 12 1/4 lengths, but struggled to find the winner's circle through the rest of the season. Romans has had the filly slowly coming back to form in 2017, most recently finishing third in the G3 Edgewood, but the Regret is her first graded victory and first win since she broke her maiden. Overall, Sweeping Paddy has a record of two wins, a second and two thirds from nine lifetime starts with earnings of nearly $190,000.
