‘So Far So Good’: Lord Nelson Preparing For Delayed Start To Stud Career

Lord Nelson had to be scratched from the 2016 Breeders’ Cup with a cut that developed into an infection in his leg, and the Pulpit horse ended up missing the 2017 breeding season when laminitis set in. According to drf.com, Lord Nelson is preparing to begin his stud career in 2018 at Spendthrift Farm.

His feet have been gradually growing out over the past year, though Lord Nelson is still wearing specialized shoes with extra cushion. He has yet to cover a mare, but is expected to do so in January. Spendthrift plans to take precautions both by limiting his book to approximately 80 mares and by ensuring that those mares are experienced breeders.

“I think this is a horse who is always likely to be at a little bit greater risk for issues than another horse, but so far so good,” said Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey. “After a lot of gradual, small, incremental increases in exercise, we’ve got him to the point where he’s going out into a small paddock for several hours a day, and he’s handling that really well.”

Instead of offering Lord Nelson with the farm’s Share the Upside program, Spendthrift will stand him at $25,000 with a standard stands and nurses contract.
