Since The Beginning: Stevens Reminisces About Past Breeders’ Cup Rides

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens will be participating once again in the Breeders’ Cup, as he’s scheduled to ride Giant Expectations in Friday’s Dirt Mile.

Stevens is the only jockey to have participated in every Breeders’ Cup since the inaugural edition in 1984, and in a recent interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, he shared memories of riding in the Breeders’ Cup over the years, including that very first one.

“All the money that was on the line was unheard of in our sport,” Stevens said. “We didn’t know if it was going to last or what it was going to be. It turned out to be our Super Bowl — two days now; two days of as good a racing as there is.”
