Saratoga WarHorse Foundation Presents Virtual Benefit Aug. 17 Through 23

Saratoga WarHorse Foundation is a nonprofit organization “leading the herd” in the area of trauma recovery for military veterans by utilizing horses. It is not “equine therapy.” It is rooted in medical science, but adapted in a way that is innovative, empirically-proven, and nobody else is doing.

Over 85 percent of the veterans who graduate from the Saratoga WarHorse program report that their lives noticeably improve, and that they maintain those improvements, even years after participating.

What’s the cherry on top? Saratoga WarHorse exclusively uses off-the-track Thoroughbreds in their program! Thoroughbred experts agree that this program helps these retired racehorses to trust and to enjoy interacting with humans and other horses which, in turn, makes them more adoptable.

Please join Saratoga WarHorse for its 2020 Armed Forces and Racehorses Virtual Benefit, available online, August 17-23! This is a unique event designed to share Saratoga WarHorse’s mission and accomplishments through virtual and video experiences. You can join now for FREE by visiting www.saratogawarhorse.org/2020gala.

“Saratoga WarHorse creates a win-win situation for military veterans and retired Thoroughbred racehorses by providing an effective, nontraditional approach for healing veterans’ invisible battle wounds, and offering retired racehorses rewarding and meaningful work after their racing careers have ended,” said Allison Cherkosly, Ph.D., the CEO of Saratoga WarHorse.

Did you know that there are 65+ military veterans and service members on Saratoga WarHorse’s Wait List? These are individuals who took the first step in their recovery by making a call and asking for help. Saratoga WarHorse answered their calls, but needs additional funds to open more program sessions to serve these brave men and women who served our country. Funds raised from the Armed Forces and Racehorses Virtual Benefit will be reinvested in the program and used to help these 65+ veterans.

The Saratoga WarHorse program takes place during 3-day classes, offered several times a month at each of its 3 locations: Aiken, SC, Albany, NY, and Baltimore, MD. It is available to veterans and service members from all branches of the military, regardless of when or for how long they served. The program is focused on helping participants get past the physiological symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress. Saratoga WarHorse exclusively uses off-the-track Thoroughbreds. The program helps these horses to trust and enjoy interaction with humans and other horses, in turn, making them more adoptable.

There is absolutely no cost for veterans to participate. Saratoga WarHorse covers the entire cost of transporting veteran participants from anywhere in the United States and U.S. territories, as well as the cost for: lodging, meals, and program instruction.

A Success Story

Meet Howies Tiz (“Howie”)- a 10 year old gelding who sold as a yearling for $250,000. Racing 17 times, his career was marred by various injuries, so he retired to ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption several years ago. ReRun is a nonprofit organization that retrains and rehomes off-the-track Thoroughbreds, and donates usage of their facilities and horses to be used in the Saratoga WarHorse program.

Last year, Howie made his debut with Saratoga WarHorse and was a total natural! Very stoic and standoffish, he made veterans work for that all-important Connection. When it finally happened, it was even more special for both Howie and the veterans.

Howie has earned himself a place as a permanent resident at ReRun and on the roster for Saratoga WarHorse. One of the veterans who was partnered with Howie earlier this year said: “All I can say is that Howie changed my life in ways that only a veteran (and maybe a horse) can appreciate… I am thankful for this program and all who made this possible. How honored I am that someone gave their own money away for ME! Thanks for the beautiful bond I will always have with my horse, Howie!”
