Saratoga: Opening Weekend Not Only Brings Fans, But Protesters

Saratoga's opening weekend not only brought out the expected large crowds but also several protesters, who called for an end to horse racing – not just at Saratoga but nationwide.

CNYCentral.com reports that the protesters were organized by the group Horseracing Wrongs, which is “dedicated to educating the public about racing injuries and deaths.” A group of between 75-100 were gathered outside the main entrance on Saturday.

The Times Union reports that the group, which was co-founded by Nicole Arciello, plans at least six protests during this year's race meet.

“We are protesting because horses are dying on American tracks every day for $2 bets,” said Patrick Battuello, who is also a member of Horseracing Wrongs. “We believe that the exploitation of animals for frivolous entertainment has no place in 21st century America.”
