Santa Anita’s ‘Ship And Stay’ Program Awards Over $8,000 In Bonuses Through Five Race Days

Santa Anita’s newly implemented “Ship & Stay” Program got off to a fast start over the first five days of racing, as the connections of 14 different horses were awarded bonuses totaling $8,432.

With Bob Baffert’s Big Gray Rocket leading the way in race five on opening day, Dec. 26, owner/trainer David Jacobson’s Top Brass, who is currently the lone “Ship & Stay” winner, is the program’s leading money earner thus far, as he shipped in from Aqueduct to take a $20,000 claiming race at 6 ½ furlongs Dec. 31 and was thus eligible for a $3,000 bonus check—on top of the winner’s share of $15,000.

Funded solely by Santa Anita and The Stronach Group, “Ship & Stay” provides on-going bonuses to individual owners and trainers who bring horses to Santa Anita from out of state. Bonuses are paid to the connections who originally brought these horses to California for their first three starts. These bonuses (20 percent of first race purse and 10 percent (or $1,000, whichever is greater) of second and third race purses) will be paid even if the horse is claimed.

In addition to Baffert and Jacobson, other trainers who have participated in the “Ship & Stay” program include: Richard Baltas, Enebish Ganbat, Mark Glatt, Anthony Saavedra, George Weaver, Peter Miller and Jack Carava.

Owners have included: Frank Fletcher Racing Operations, Inc., Mogolian Stable, Zayat Stables, LLC, Final Turn Stables, LLC, Red Baron’s Barn, LLC or Rancho Temescal, LLC, Zolotas or Romo-Zolotas, Diane Balsamo, Ron Crockett, Inc. and Mr. and Mrs. William T. Griffin, Bergum or Simonovic, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bruce Golden Racing, Ackerman Equine, LLC and Medallion Racing and Sparks, Mongolian Stable, and Steve Bajer or John O’Hara.
