Santa Anita: Stewards Warn Desormeaux Over Training Whip Use

Jockey Kent Desormeaux was officially warned by Santa Anita stewards June 10 for his controversial actions while exercising a horse at the track May 28.

The warning came as a result of Desormeaux's actions when aboard the colt Demonslayer. As the colt was finishing up nearing the wire, Desormeaux whipped him three times, then struck him on the shoulder three times during the gallop out.  Steward Kim Sawyer told the BloodHorse that they would've taken “harsher action”, but did not because they could not find a rule within the California Horse Racing Board guidelines to employ for the situation.

“We could have very easily penalized him, but we couldn't find a rule to use,” Sawyer told the publication. “What was upsetting to me was that he hit the horse after the workout.”

She indicated that there currently was a CHRB proposal in the works to address such an issue, however.

“He was trying to pull up and prop,” Desormeaux said recently in response to the stewards' warning. “The only difference between me and other guys was I was standing up and not (riding with) my hands. If (Demonslayer) had his way, he would have turned around or stopped entirely.”

“I think it's fair to say we didn't buy the propping explanation,” Sawyer said.
