Santa Anita Cancels Friday Card Due To Anticipated Rains

Santa Anita released the following statement late Monday:

Due to the forecasted heavy rain in Southern California, Santa Anita has cancelled racing scheduled for this Friday out of an abundance of caution. Racing for this weekend will be evaluated later this week and will be dependent on the forecast.

In the wake of last year’s spike in equine breakdowns, officials from The Stronach Group had indicated several fatal injuries came after horses had raced or worked on surfaces that had been sealed. Tracks are sealed to encourage water to run across the surface and drain away, limiting the amount of moisture that can penetrate top layer of dirt.

As of March 2019, 12 of the 21 fatalities up to that point of the 2018-19 season had a history of running on sealed surfaces.
