Samples and Responses Needed For Equine Muscle Disease Survey

Muscle disorders in horses aren’t uncommon as breeds have been specifically bred for specific characteristics like speed, endurance or pulling ability. Among some of the more-common heritable muscle diseases are polysaccharide storage myopathy type 1 (PSSM1), hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), immune-mediated myositis (IMM), malignant hyperthermia (MH), PSSM type 2 (PSSM2), recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) and myofibrillar myopathy (MFM), among others.

The disease-causing alleles have been identified for HYPP, PSSM1, IMM and MH. This identification has allowed for a genetic test to determine if a particular allele is causing disease in an individual horse and determine how often the disease occurs in individual breeds.

The genetic mechanisms behind PSSM2, MFM and RER are mostly unknown. The University of Minnesota Equine Genetics and Genomics Laboratory is seeking more than 3,000 horses to provide a deeper understanding of the genetic and management factors that influence equine muscle disease. This information will help researchers, veterinarians and horse owners in developing treatment strategies for individual horses.

The UMN Equine Genetics and Genomics Laboratory is requesting the help of horse owners to assist in this study by:

  1. Providing information in our Muscle Disease in Horses Survey for a horse on your property with suspected or diagnosed muscle disease
  2. Providing the same information in the same survey for another horse of similar age and breed on your property without suspected or diagnosed muscle disease
  3. Uploading photos, videos, blood test results with creatine kinase (CK) and aspartate transaminase (AST) values, muscle biopsy results, and genetic testing results for each horse to our secure file-receiving folder on Dropbox
  4. Mailing in hay, grain, supplement, and hair root or blood samples to the laboratory
