Sacramento Health Director Orders Harness Racing Halted At Cal Expo

The health director of Sacramento County, Peter Beilenson, has ordered a stop to harness racing at Cal Expo, the Sacramento Bee reported on Wednesday evening. The decision is meant to help stop the spread of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

Beilenson issued a “stay at home” order on March 19, but Cal Expo was told it was exempt to that order. The track continued to race while closed to the public through the latter half of March, but races were cancelled Wednesday with just seven dates remaining.

“The drivers are within a couple of feet of each other and obviously could be breathing on each other,” Beilenson told the Sacramento Bee.

Track employees will be allowed to remain and care for the 300 horses stabled at Cal Expo.
