Royal Ascot: Ward-Trained Filly Shang Shang Shang Wires Norfolk Stakes By A Nose

The only filly in a field of 10 juveniles, Shang Shang Shang took up the early running and held on late to capture the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot Thursday.

The daughter of Shanghai Bobby broke sharply under Joel Rosario and held off the charge of 20-1 Pocket Dynamo to prevail by a nose in 59.87 for the five-furlong distance. Land Force was third at 7-1.

Trained by Wesley Ward and owned by Breeze Easy, LLC, Shang Shang Shang was bred in Florida by Kris R. Del Giudice out of the Yankee Victor mare, Yankee Victoria. She was purchased for $200,000 at the OBS March sale of 2-year-olds in training.

The Norfolk Stakes win was the 10th victory at Royal Ascot for Ward, who won his first race at the meet in 2009.

Wesley Ward was all smiles after his 10th Royal Ascot win

“This is just the best,” the 50-year-old native of Selah, Wash., said. “There’s nothing like it. Nothing like it.”

Although 2-1 on the morning line, Shang Shang Shang went off at 5-1. She was making her second career start after winning a maiden special weight at Keeneland in April.

Ward heaped praise on Rosario, whose only previous Royal Ascot win came with the Ward-trained No Nay Never in the 2013 Norfolk.

“Let me tell you about this jockey,” said Ward. “He’s fabulous. He put his time and effort in. That’s why he’s here. He’s won Derbies, World Cups, he was breezing my 2-year-olds every morning all winter long.”

“She responded to every thing I asked her to do,” said Rosario. “She was calm in the beginning and broke well. I had to use her a little bit to get her into stride. It was very close in the last part but we got it done.”

“He had icewater in his veins,” said Ward. “He never drew the saber until the last few jumps, when he needed it. Had he moved a little closer I’m sure we’d be on the other end of the photo.”

The Norfolk is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, a Win and You’re In race for the new Juvenile Turf Sprint.
