Rosario’s Stakes Hat Trick Nets Jockey Of The Week Title

In one of the more contentious ballots of the year, Joel Rosario was named Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week title for August 27 – September 3, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by, America’s #1 Equine Toxin Remover.

The Labor Day weekend included nearly 100 stakes races and several major meet riding titles. Joel Rosario rose to the top of the list after winning three stakes, all graded, and leading by earnings.

Rosario was one of just five jockeys to win three or more stakes races last week; for Rosario, all were graded and all were on the same day.

Rosario’s hat trick happened on the Saturday card at Saratoga. His first win of the day was in the $300,000 Saranac Stakes (G3). His mount was the post-time favorite, Raging Bull ($6.50) who cleared the field of nine by just over a length for trainer Chad Brown.

In the $350,000 Spinaway, the next race on the card, Rosario was on a horse with less public support. Sippican Harbor ($34.00) made a deep closing move to win by two for trainer Gary Contessa.

Sippican Harbor made the switch from turf to dirt, as did Rosario’s mount in what would be his third straight stakes win of the day, the $750,000 Woodward Stakes (G1). Yoshida was a multiple graded stakes winner on the turf, but his dirt form was unknown, despite being a grandson of multiple Grade 1 dirt winner Sunday Silence.

Yoshida ($14.40) and Rosario left no doubts about the 4-year-old’s colts abilities on the dirt, defeating a full field of 13 other older horses, including some of the best in the division, by two lengths over a fast main track.

The stakes wins vaulted him to the top of the earnings leaderboard for the week, with $787,500 in stakes earnings and $1,071,290 in total earnings, more than any other North American jockey.

Rosario ended the week with five wins, eight second-place finishes, and nine third-place finishes in 32 starts, giving him a win rate of 16% and an in-the-money rate of 69%. He has won exactly 100 mounts in 2018 out of 598 starts, with $12 million earnings. His career totals including $177 million, with 2,547 wins in 14,053 starts.
