Restless Rider Cruises To G1 Win In Darley Alcibiades

Fern Circle Stables and Three Chimneys Farm’s Restless Rider made it look easy in Friday’s Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades, taking command around the far turn and cruising under the wire a three-length winner. The 2-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor, ridden by Brian Hernandez for trainer Ken McPeek, covered 1 1/16 miles over Keeneland’s fast main track in 1:44.23. Sent off as the 6-5 favorite after her second-place finish in the G1 Spinaway, Restless Rider’s Alcibiades win earned her an expenses-paid berth to next month’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs.

“She took us,” said McPeek. “She is really, really special. It hasn’t been as easy as it might look on paper and what she did today. It wasn’t an exact straight line since the Spinaway (G1), but we got through it.

“(With) the weather changing here, there’s been a lot of horses that have been dealing with coughs here and there. She got one of them, and we were worried a little bit. But we kept on top of it. We have a great team. It’s a great team effort, and she is special.”

Meadow Dance jumped out on top of the 14-horse field, leading by a length into the clubhouse turn while Hernandez kept Restless Rider in close attendance at the rail in third behind Lady T N T. Meadow Dance set fractions of :22.86 and :46.52, but Restless Rider came off the rail nearing the half-mile pole and started to range up on the leader.

Restless Rider easily took the lead around the turn, and continued to stride out all the way through the wire to win by about three lengths. Reflect came from mid-pack to finish second, while Meadow Dance held on to finish third. Chocolate Kisses was fourth.

“Kenny came up with a great game plan just to get her around the first turn in good order,” Hernandez said. “Luckily we have a good filly that was able to do everything we needed her to do. Once we got in our position going around the first turn, I was pretty confident in her because she’s something special.”

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbreds, Restless Rider was a $150,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland September. She has lost just once in four career starts, finishing second by two lengths in the Spinaway at Saratoga. With three wins in the bank, Restless Rider boasts earnings of nearly $400,000.
