Report: San Luis Rey Downs Expected To Reopen For Limited Training By Feb. 1

The San Luis Rey Downs training center, which was partially destroyed in a wildfire in early December, is expected to reopen for limited training in the next few weeks.

The Daily Racing Form reports that Feb. 1 is the target date for the limited opening, with full training to resume in the spring.

Tim Ritvo, the chief operating officer for The Stronach Group, which owns San Luis Rey, told the Form in a recent interview that demolition crews are expected to begin removing debris and cleaning up the property this month.

Ritvo indicated that short term plans call for San Luis Rey to reopen for limited training by Feb. 1; stabling capacity will available for approximately 200 horses, in barns that were not affected by the fire. Ritvo said that officials have accepted bids on the construction of temporary barns which can accommodate another 200-300 horses.

Ritvo added that the goal is to have the barns completed by April 1.
