Report: Jose Ortiz To Have Knee Surgery; Will Be Sidelined Six Weeks

Jose Ortiz, one of the leading riders in North America, will undergo knee surgery Dec. 5 and will be sidelined at least six weeks, according to a report in the Daily Racing Form.

Ortiz missed a week of riding in September after injuring his left knee in a spill at Belmont Park. Jim Riccio Jr., Ortiz’s agent, told the Form that although Ortiz is not riding in pain, doctors had advised him to have the knee “cleaned up.”

Ortiz and Riccio have targeted a return to riding by the end of January, hopefully in time to ride in the Pegasus World Cup Jan. 27.

Ortiz will continue to ride through the first weekend of December. According to the Form, on Nov. 26, he is scheduled to ride Rubilinda in the G1 Matriarch at Del Mar, and on Dec. 2, he will ride Seymourdini in the G1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct.
