Report: Groups Reveal Proposals For Developing Land Around Belmont Park

Two groups hoping to develop underutilized property around Belmont Park unveiled their plans Dec. 10 during a meeting at Elmont High School before several hundred area residents.

The Daily Racing Form reports that while neither project is expected to hinder racing at Belmont in the long run, there could be a short-term impact during construction of either project.

The two groups that revealed plans for the land were the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders and the New York City Football Club.

The New York Islanders want to build an 18,000-seat arena on the land. The proposal also includes 435,000 square feet of dining and retail space, a hotel, and 10,000 square feet for community space.

The New York City Football Club, a professional soccer team, wants to build a 26,000-seat soccer stadium. The proposal also includes 400,000 square feet for dining and retail.

The Empire State Development Corp. will determine which group gets to go ahead with its proposal. The DRF reports that Empire State Development has not indicated when it would announce its decision.
