Over the past six months, Churchill Downs Inc. has been buying up property surrounding the historic racetrack, spending close to $13 million to do so.
The reason behind the purchases had been unknown, or at least track representatives weren’t revealing any information. However, according to a report by NewsRadio 840 WHAS, Churchill Downs is planning to greatly expand their parking.
WHAS reports that the racetrack has filed paperwork with the city of Louisville that will allow them to close “about a dozen streets and alleys on the west side of the track to make way for an expanded parking lot and landscaping.”
According to the report, Churchill currently has 5,000 parking spots at the track; officials are only saying that the expansion will add a “substantial” amount to that.
